Recovery from rape and sexual violence or child abuse is possible. With professional help many victims go on to become survivors and live fulfilling, successful and happy lives. If you have been sexually abused or assaulted or if this has happened to a loved one, you are not alone.
This is a worldwide problem and is not related to any particular country, culture or class.
It is estimated that over 20 thousand adults aged 16 - 59 were sexually assaulted in the UK last year (Office of National Statistics 2017)
In addition, 11% of females and 3% of males reported having been sexually abused as children according to the 2015 to2016 Crime survey for England and Wales but no one knows the true number.
Many experience Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), others find themselves struggling with relationships, or turn to drugs and/or alcohol to try and block out painful memories. Many suffer with mental health problems as a result of what has happened to them and others just suffer in silence carrying the secret their entire lives.
Counselling therefore needs to be managed carefully, ensuring that clients feel very safe, understood and most importantly that they are not re-traumatised by the counselling experience.
